Most outdoor lighting is an installation. Event lighting exists for a date. A wedding, a graduation party, a corporate evening, a reception: these are one night jobs. That changes the whole approach, because there is no version of this you fix next weekend.That single fact drives the rest of it. An installation has time to be adjusted. An event has one performance. So the planning happens early, the contingencies get discussed out loud, and nothing important gets left to the day itself.

An event cannot. That means planning happens further ahead than the job size suggests. Even a modest setup involves a visit, a plan and scheduled labor, and none of them compress.
The unglamorous part
Indoor events have outlets. A back yard, a field, a venue lawn usually has power in the wrong place. Ask about the power source and the cable routing before the design conversation feels finished. A beautiful plan nobody can energize is not a plan.Tell the lighting company what else is going into the space, because the other vendors have needs that overlap with theirs.
Planning for the day going wrong
Outdoor events in the Upstate can meet weather. It is worth asking what happens if the forecast turns, even though nobody enjoys it. Knowing whether the setup can move under cover, whether the date can shift, and who decides is worth more than any fixture choice.
What tends to matter at an event
At an outdoor event there are two jobs: atmosphere and navigation. The photographed parts are the overhead canopy, the head table, the ceremony area, the feature tree. The functional parts are the walkways, the steps and the exits. Both belong on the list. Only one of them ends up in the photographs.
The venue gets a vote
If the event is at a venue, the property has its own requirements. When you can get in, what you can fasten to, and when it all has to come out are not yours to make. Introduce them before the week of. It is free and it prevents the most.
How much is actually enough
The instinct with an event is more. Outdoors after dark, the eye adapts and small amounts read as plenty. The spaces that look best in photographs are lit sparingly, with warm light and real darkness between the lit areas. A designer who says the plan is already enough is doing you a favor.
