Curb appeal gets planned entirely for daylight
The front of a home absorbs a lot of budget. Every bit of it is judged in the sun. Then the sun goes down and the whole thing disappears. Half the hours anybody sees the front of your home are after sunset for a good part of the year, and most of them see nothing.None of that is complicated: an outline, a focal point, and matched color. What it requires is deciding to treat the night view as a real thing, which is the part almost everybody skips. The houses that stand out after dark are almost always the ones where somebody thought about it.
What a driver sees
From a moving car at forty feet, nobody sees detail. What carries is the outline and a couple of features. That means the roofline, the entry and one or two features do almost all the work. A lit roof edge draws the outline. A lit entry tells you where the front of the house is. An accent or two creates dimension.
Not the holiday one
People buy permanent lighting thinking about holiday color. A soft white wash down the front of a house is not a decoration. It is the house, visible. That is the setting responsible for the curb appeal argument, and it is the one people forget to ask about.
The thing that separates good from cheap
The fastest way to make a front elevation look thrown together is lights of different whites. Two different whites on one elevation are immediately noticeable, even to people who could not name the problem. Getting every source on the same warm temperature is a bigger improvement than more light.
The commercial version
The same logic holds for a commercial building, with a more direct consequence. A well lit facade says the business is open and cared for. A dark one reads as closed at best.
What else is visible
Almost every plan is written for the front elevation only. Very few people approach a house straight on. They see it at an angle as they go by. A run that stops abruptly at the corner is obvious from that angle. Carrying the line around the corner even a short distance fixes it, and it belongs in the plan from the start.
Where to start if the budget is small
The single highest value target is the front door, by a wide margin. A lit entry tells the eye where to land, which is what stops a house from reading as a flat lit wall. It is also the one piece of lighting that does obvious practical work, since that is where anybody arriving has to go.
