Every quote uses the word custom
Nobody advertises a generic plan. It costs nothing to say and it is not a claim anybody checks. The test is not the word. It is whether anything was drawn before you were asked to decide.Keep that in mind while you are comparing companies. A package is a price with a description attached. A design starts with your building and arrives at a number. Both are legitimate ways to sell. Only one of them answers to your building, and you deserve to know which you have.
What you should be looking at
A plan is specific to your building. It names which rooflines, which gables, which trees, which walkways, rather than describing the front of the house in general terms. It says what the standard white is. It says where the controller mounts and how the wiring runs. And it accounts for what stays dark, deliberately.
Why the design has to come before the price
You cannot compare quotes if you do not know what work each one covers. The cheaper number is often the one covering less, which you find out once it is up. With a plan on the table, price becomes a real comparison. When the price comes first, the design gets shaped to fit the number, quietly.A plan you understand is also a plan you can hold somebody to, which is the practical reason to insist on one rather than accepting a number and a handshake.
Designing for the way you use the property
Expect to be asked things, rather than pitched. How you use the outside of your home, which parts you occupy at night, and whether the priority is holidays, everyday light, or both. Those answers shape the design as much as the building.
Where a plan earns its keep
Roofline, landscape, accent, patio and security work usually all appear on the list. Bought separately over several years, they never quite agree: different whites, different intensities, competing focal points. One plan, phased if it needs to be, still ends up coherent.
Revisions
A design is the start of a conversation. If a run does not appeal to you, say so. If it comes back to you unchanged, or the answer is that this is how it is done, that is worth noticing. Ask how many rounds are normal before you sign anything.
The plan is a document you keep
A design should exist on paper or a screen after the conversation ends. It is useful down the road for reasons you cannot predict now. The design is part of what you bought.
